Hey NRSNG Family! We are so excited that we’ve been able to put together these skills videos for you. We know how repetitive and monotonous skills videos can be. They go through the same 5 steps at the beginning of every video! Instead, we wanted to jump straight to the meat and potatoes of the nursing skill. That’s how we do things here at NRSNG! So, we figured we’d tell you one time about the important safety steps you should do with every patient, every skill, every time.
Verify order details and purpose
Gather required supplies
Identify your patient (2 identifiers)
Hand hygiene
Apply gloves
Correct position - bed at working height

Also, in addition to that… ANY time you are giving medications of ANY kind, there are some specific other safety things to consider that you will always do:
Make sure you got the right drug out of the Pyxis!!
Always prepare meds at the bedside
Verify the patient’s allergies
Use your 5 rights! EVERY TIME
Don’t document until AFTER you give it!
Always evaluate response/effect after

So, for each one of the skills videos, you’ll see that the nurse already has everything prepared, is wearing gloves, and you can just assume they’ve already done the appropriate safety steps. They’re gonna jump right into the skill itself! So again, make sure you’re doing these safety things for every patient, every skill, every time.

So dive in, review the outlines for each skill while you watch the videos, and we hope you enjoy the course! Now, go out and be your best selves today. And, as always, happy nursing!
