Mechanism of Action

Slows conduction through the AV node, interrupts re-entry pathways through AV node, restoring normal sinus rhythm

Indication

Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia

Side Effects

  • Flushing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea

Nursing Considerations

  • Contraindications
    • 2nd or 3rd degree AV Block
    • Atrial flutter
    • Atrial fibrillation
  • Monitor before administration
    • Blood pressure
    • Apical pulse
  • Patient on cardiac monitor
  • Period of asystole after bolus

Patient Education

  • May feel flush after bolus
  • Avoid caffeine
