  2. Abbreviated as Hb vaccine or HBV (not to be confused with HPV)

Nursing Points

General

  1. Recommended by CDC to be given in first 12 hours of life
  2. IM injection
  3. If mother already has Hepatitis B, then Hep B immune globulin also needs to be given

Nursing Considerations

  1. Obtain consent
  2. Give IM injection in lateral side of middle 3rd of vastus lateralis muscle
  3. Document per policy
    1. Typically includes documenting in hospital chart and providing a card to the parents for their records

Patient Education

  1. Educate importance and need
  2. If they want to refuse; follow hospital policy and document appropriately
