Action

Blocks the breakdown of dopamine, increasing it’s activity

Monoamine oxidase type B inhibitor

Nursing Considerations

  • Often used in conjunction with other Parkinson medications
    • Levidopa-carbidopa
  • Do not use within 5 weeks of fluoxetine
  • Do not use within 14 days of
    • Antidepressants
    • St. John’s wort
    • Methadone
    • MAOIs
    • Demerol
  • Caution
    • Liver or kidney disease
    • Hypertension
  • Monitor
    • Blood pressure
    • Mood and behavior
    • Suicidal ideation
