Okay, let's take a look at pan Topol, also known as protonics. This is an oral medication, as you can see here, and it also comes in an IV form. The therapeutic class of pan Topol is an anti ulcer agent. And remember, this is how drug works in the body. The pharmacologic class is a proton pump inhibitor. So pan Topol works by preventing the transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen. And it binds to gastric PRAL cells and therefore decreases gastric acid production because of this, we use it for the treatment of GERD heartburn, and it reduces the risk of GI bleeding and critical patients. A few side effects that we do see with this drug are abdominal pain and also hyperglycemia
A few nursing considerations for pan Topol. It is important to know that this drug can decrease the absorption of certain drugs, and it also increases bleeding with warfarin. Be sure to assess your patient for a clot blood. Also assess their liver enzymes and their symptoms of heartburn. When giving this drug by IV push, it is important to administer it slowly and teach your patient to report any symptoms of heartburn and also any blood in their stool. So pan top result does increase the risk of C eat diff. So you need to keep this in mind. If your patient suddenly develops watery stool. While on this medication, send out cultures immediately to assess for C diff that's it for pan top result or Protonix now go out and be your best self today. And as always have be nursing.
