I made many mistakes along my journey as a nursing student. I almost quit, but thankfully, I found support and a community to hold my hand.

If you’re trying to learn more about different nursing schools, here is some information on Joseph F McCloskey School of Nursing that might be helpful.

Joseph F McCloskey Nursing School Reviews

McCloskey School of Nursing at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, offers a three-year nonresident dual enrollment program with Alevenia University.

The school opened its doors in 1895 to provide a safe and state-of-the-art learning environment for students to learn clinical skills that prepare them to work as Registered Nurses (RNs).

By then, the school was part of the Pottsville Hospital, which has changed names several times to present-day Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Schuylkill S. Jackson Street, part of Lehigh Valley Health Network Schuylkill County.

The school is an accredited nurses’ educator in Schuylkill and surrounding areas. It has had over 2500 graduates since its inception.

The school is named in honor of Judge Joseph F. McCloskey, a senior Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judge…

He was a dedicated Chairman of the Former Pottsville Hospital and Schuylkill Health and longtime board member. He was also instrumental in the development and success of LVH–Schuylkill.

Joseph F McCloskey School of Nursing has a close relationship with other Lehigh Valley Health Networks like LVH-Schuylkill, LVH-Cedar Crest, and LVH-Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network.

The affiliation allows the students to get hands-on experience in more than one area of nursing. This fast-track program prepares students for roles such as registered nurses, nurse specialists, ADONs, and nurse managers while giving them more time to spend with patients during their student years.

The McCloskey School of Nursing has a network of professional developments, including:

  • Membership in the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Ongoing seminars and conferences to keep abreast with advances in nursing practices, educational programs, and technology.
  • Annual career fairs

McCloskey School of Nursing offers a variety of registered nursing degree programs. They range from the LPN to BSN, from an accelerated program for qualified RNs to additional postgraduate training courses.

Popular course topics include cardiology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, and senior care to name a few.

THE SCHOOL OF NURSING SAYS…

It has a unique approach to preparing you for your future role in nursing. The school offers a wide range of postgraduate programs, giving you more time with patients and working on innovative projects.

The programs are designed to meet the challenges that RNs face every day in hospitals and other medical centers… Their classes are small and personalized…you can follow your peers to get support.

The educational program consists of one year (two semesters) of university studies and two years (six terms) of nursing and university courses.

Alvernia University – Schuylkill Centre’s nursing course component is built on a foundation of 28 credits.

If you complete related courses in other colleges or universities, they might be considered for transfer before enrollment.

The program’s graduates will receive an RN diploma as well as an Associate Degree in Applied Science… Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

The school’s mission is to improve the community’s health through education, research, and patient care.

The Learning Environment

The nursing school located at Washington and Jackson streets is a commuter school housing classrooms, laboratory, library, faculty, and the administration…

Students get clinical experiences that complement classroom instructions, but the school also works together with off-campus agencies to expand the students’ knowledge.

Because of learning in a health care environment, students gain experience in

  • Medical-surgical perioperative
  • Maternal-child
  • Mental health
  • Emergency care
  • Home health and a variety of clinics and ancillary health services

The NEW Dual-Enrollment Program with Alvernia University

With the announcement of the school’s partnership with Alvernia University, the current nursing program will retire with the graduating class of 2023. For those applying for admission in fall 2022, they will have DUAL-ENROLMENT.

It means that they will simultaneously enroll in Joseph F. McCloskey’s School of Nursing RN Diploma Program and Alvernia University’s Associate of Science Degree…

Graduates will get credentials to sit for NCLEX after completing the course. For 34 additional credits, graduates can take the Alvernia University’s RN-BSN Completion Program online or Alvernia’s Schuylkill Centre in Pottsville. To be considered for admission, you require…

A high school diploma or equivalent and an official high school transcript…

The high school transcript must reflect two mathematic courses, algebra as one of them. Additionally, it must have two science courses with laboratory components as one of them with chemistry included.

Other criteria include:

  • High school class rank
  • GERD and GPA
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test score
  • Work and volunteer experiences in the health care field
  • Current CPR certification at the Healthcare Provider level

Credit for life experience through testing such as HESI A2, ATI TEAS V, MAT, OAT, and TABE. The school says it’s committed to providing transition support during this change.

Everything is perfect at this school. The staff is excellent, the class size is good for my learning style, and the lecturing pace is good.

I originally wanted to attend Bloomsburg University, but I was not accepted there. I decided to attend Joseph F. McCloskey instead, and I couldn’t be happier. Everything is working out so great.

From these reviews, most students have a lot to say about their learning experience, the atmosphere, relationship with the administration, and other students…

The key highlight is that most are ‘okay’ with the program, while critical concerns were the lack of adequate communication, small classrooms, and sets of rules and regulations they have to adhere to.

Some had conflicting experiences, which is understandable because personalities and expectations are different.

From these reviews, it’s apparent that nursing school life is not a bed of roses. You’ll experience challenges right from the application process and even after successful admission.

More than a quarter of all nursing school students quit the program early, and more than 34% don’t even get admission even though they qualify… The reasons for leaving include:

  • Stress and overwork
  • Hard education programs

An education structure that doesn’t cater to the needs of special learner groups such as the visually impaired, ADHD, learning disabled, Autistic/Asperger’s learners…

However, as I realized, you require a supplemental education tool to help you get into and through nursing school
