Common questions with answers for pre-nursing students preparing to take the HESI-A2 entrance exam for nursing school.

Learn More
What is the HESI® admission assessment?

HESI Admission Assessment, also called the HESI A2®, is an entrance exam that is used by nursing schools to determine your attrition rate (meaning if you will be able to do well in nursing school). Many nursing schools use this as a point of admission, meaning if you do not pass the exam with the score they want, you cannot apply to their nursing school. Each nursing school uses different parts of the HESI A2® exam as there are 8 categories as well as a personality style and learning style test. A nursing school may want all categories to be tested on, whereas another may only require 4 categories, check with the school you are applying to for details on their requirements.

Where to buy a HESI® study guide?

HESI® is written by the company Evolve Elsevier. They would have the best study material.
And here is their book from Amazon, which is much cheaper: HESI® Exam Review

Which is harder HESI® or TEAS®?

This is debatable, but some people think the TEAS® test is harder because it will have two really good answers that are hard to chose from. However, both are very similar in difficulty as far as content is considered.

What does the HESI® test consist of?

The HESI A2® exam has 8 categories as well as a personality style test (15 questions with 15 minutes to answer) and learning style test (14 questions with 15 minutes to answer).

The categories are as follows:

  • Biology: 25 questions with 25 minutes to answer.
  • Chemistry: 25 questions with 25 minutes to answer.
  • Physics: 25 questions with 50 minutes to answer.
  • Reading comprehension: 47 questions with 60 minutes to answer.
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge: 50 questions with 50 minutes to answer.
  • Grammar: 50 questions with 50 minutes to answer.
  • Math: 50 questions with 50 minutes to answer.
  • Anatomy and Physiology: 25 questions with 25 minutes to answer.
What does HESI® mean?

Health Education System Incorporated.

They have two main tests, the admissions assessment test (or sometimes called A2) or the exit exam (taken at the end of nursing school). The admissions assessment is similar to TEAS® and is used to help determine your eligibility to the nursing school. Nursing schools have their own preference so you need to check with the school you are trying to apply to to find out which test you need to take.

When to take the HESI® exam?

Check with your school about when it is offered and when they think you should take the exam. You can only take the HESI® exam once in a 12 month period so make sure you take it at the right time for your school. School guidance counselors can help you with figuring out the right time to take this test.

When is the HESI® exam offered ?

This depends on the facility offering the exam. Start by checking with your school to find out if they do the testing at the school or if they do the testing through a separate company. Once you figure out the location, you can start checking their websites for times that the test is offered. It should be noted that you need to have talked with your school’s guidance counselor before you decide on the time to take the test to ensure you are taking it at the optimal time for your program.

How to pass HESI® entrance exam?

The best way to pass the HESI® is to study using the study guide provided by Evolve Elsevier and to take the test after talking to your prospective schools guidance counselor as to which categories need to be taken for their program as well as when that school recommends you take it.

If you are looking at more than one nursing school then you should make sure to check with all schools involved and make a plan based off the needs of all the schools.

HESI A2®, what to expect?

You will be in a secured testing area, on a computer, with a proctor overseeing the exam administration. You will not be allowed to bring in personal items like your cell phone. You will take the exam for either the allotted time or until you have finished, whichever comes first. Afterwards you will be able to print your results. The exam scores will be sent to whichever school(s) you requested.
